After nearly a decade in the financial industry, Canaan Penland established Advanced Retirement Planning with the intention of educating investors and retirees on how to navigate the complexities of the modern financial system. “Between the financial industry’s relentless focus on sales and a financial system more complex than ever, how could anyone ever realistically plan for retirement?” says Penland. “With ultra-aggressive monetary policy having supported the financial system since the market crash in 2008-2009, it has completely upended the normal rules of retirement planning, not to mention the expectations investors have for their financial outlook.” After graduating summa cum laude with honors with a degree in Business Administration & Finance from Roanoke College in Southwestern Virginia, Canaan moved to Southern California to join his father in the financial services field. Having studied the financial markets throughout his childhood and youth, perhaps to the detriment of his school work at times, a career in asset management and financial education was inevitable. Mr. Penland has taught classes on retirement planning and how to maximize social security benefits in the South Bay since 2014, and he immensely enjoys this work.
